Dentistry at a slower pace

Unhurried dental care, explained before it starts.

We keep appointments long enough to talk things through. Check-ups, hygiene, fillings and crowns, alignment, and a same-day slot held back each morning for people in pain.

How the practice runs

The practical details, before you book.

Most questions we get asked are about logistics rather than teeth. Here is how a week at the practice is organised, so you can judge whether we fit around your days.

Appointment lengths
Routine check-ups are 25 minutes, hygiene visits 40, and new patient exams 50. Restorative work is booked by the stage rather than squeezed into a single long sitting.
Which days run hygiene
Hygiene clinics run Tuesday to Thursday, with the late Thursday list reserved for people who cannot take time out of the working day.
Reminders and changes
You get a reminder a week ahead and again two days before. Moving an appointment is free up to 24 hours beforehand, and we keep a short-notice list for cancelled slots.
Records from a previous dentist
Bring the practice name and we request your notes and recent radiographs, which often saves repeating x-rays at the first visit.

If you are in pain today, say so in the notes field of the booking request. Those messages are read first, before routine enquiries.

Four care lanes

What we treat, and what each visit actually includes.

We work in four lanes rather than a long list of named procedures. Each one tells you what happens in the chair and roughly how long to set aside.

Lane 01

Check-ups & hygiene

The maintenance work that keeps everything else small and cheap.

  • Soft tissue and gum screening
  • Radiographs only when clinically indicated
  • Scale, polish and airflow where useful
  • Brushing technique review for the areas you miss

25–40 minutes · every 6–12 months

Lane 02

Restorative work

Repairing what has broken down, in stages you can follow.

  • Composite fillings matched to tooth shade
  • Crowns, onlays and bridge work
  • Root canal treatment with rubber dam
  • Replacing old restorations that have begun to leak

45–90 minutes · one to three stages

Lane 03

Alignment & appearance

Straightening and tidying, with the limits stated up front.

  • Clear aligner assessment and scans
  • Retainers, including replacements
  • Supervised home whitening trays
  • Edge bonding to even out worn front teeth

Consultation 40 minutes · plans vary

Lane 04

Urgent, same day

For pain, swelling, a lost filling or a broken front tooth.

  • One reserved slot each weekday morning
  • Diagnosis and relief of pain first
  • Temporary repairs to get you through the week
  • Definitive treatment booked separately

30 minutes · same day where possible

Your first visit

Four steps, and nothing starts without your say-so.

No treatment happens at the first appointment unless you are in pain and want it dealt with that day.

Step 01

Sitting down first

We talk before the chair goes back — what has brought you in, past experiences that went badly, and anything you would rather we avoided.

Step 02

A full look around

Teeth, gums, bite, jaw joints and soft tissues, with photographs so you can see what we are describing on the screen.

Step 03

Options, in plain words

Usually there are two or three reasonable paths, including doing nothing for now. We say which we would choose and why.

Step 04

A written plan

You leave with the plan in writing: stages, order, estimated costs and the review date. Nothing is booked under pressure.

Request a first visit

Already have a plan from another practice? Bring it and we will give you a second opinion on it.

If you have been putting it off

Nervous patients are the normal case here, not the exception.

Plenty of people arrive having avoided a dentist for years, often because of one bad appointment a long time ago. That history is useful information, not something to apologise for. Tell us about it and we will work around it.

  • A first appointment that is a conversation only, with no instruments used
  • An agreed hand signal to stop, honoured immediately every time
  • Topical gel before any injection, and slower delivery to reduce the sting
  • Treatment broken into shorter sittings rather than one long session
  • Inhalation sedation for suitable patients, discussed at assessment

Mention it in your booking notes and the clinician will have read it before you walk in.

Fees and plans

How costs are worked out, and when you hear them.

We will not quote a figure for work we have not looked at. What we can explain is how the number is built and what you will be told before agreeing to anything.

Estimates in writing

After the exam you receive an itemised estimate: each stage, the material used, the appointment it falls in and what happens if a tooth turns out to need more than expected.

Given before treatment starts

Monthly maintenance plan

An optional plan spreads routine check-ups, hygiene visits and radiographs across the year, with a reduction on restorative work. Cancel with a month's notice.

Optional · no joining fee

Larger treatment

Longer courses can be staged over months so the cost arrives in instalments, or arranged through a regulated finance provider if you prefer. We will say which is cheaper for you.

Staged or financed

Insurance and employer schemes: bring your policy details to the first visit and reception will tell you what the scheme usually covers and what it does not before you commit.

Questions

The things people ask at reception.

How do I move my records across from my old dentist?

Give us the practice name and town on your booking request. We write to them for your notes and any radiographs taken in the last year, which usually arrive within a fortnight and often save repeating images. You do not need to contact them yourself, and you are not obliged to tell them why you are moving.

At what age should a child first be seen?

As soon as the first teeth appear, and certainly by their first birthday. Early visits are deliberately uneventful — a ride in the chair, counting teeth, a look with a mirror — so that the room is familiar long before anything needs doing. Children are booked alongside a parent's appointment where that helps.

What happens if something goes wrong outside opening hours?

Our answerphone message carries the current out-of-hours arrangement, including which urgent dental service is covering evenings and weekends. If you have had treatment with us that week, the message tells you how to reach the clinician who treated you. Swelling that affects your breathing or swallowing is a hospital emergency, not a dental one.

Can I have dental treatment while pregnant?

Yes, and routine check-ups and hygiene visits are actively worth keeping, because gums often become more inflamed during pregnancy. Tell us the stage you have reached: we avoid elective radiographs, keep appointments shorter, and adjust the chair position for comfort later on. Urgent problems are always treated rather than postponed.

How white will whitening actually make my teeth?

Whitening lifts the natural shade of your own enamel by a few steps; it does not produce a uniform shade and has no effect on crowns, veneers or white fillings, which stay the colour they were made. We take a shade record first so the change is measurable rather than a matter of opinion, and we will tell you beforehand if we think the result will disappoint you.

Do you offer sedation, and is it suitable for everyone?

We offer inhalation sedation for suitable adults and older children. It is not suitable for everyone — certain respiratory conditions, blocked nasal passages, some medications and the first trimester of pregnancy all rule it out, and it is assessed before being offered rather than promised in advance. For many nervous patients, longer appointments and agreed stop signals turn out to be enough.

What if I cannot face an appointment once I have booked it?

Tell us rather than disappearing. Moving the appointment costs nothing up to 24 hours beforehand, and if nerves are the reason we can swap it for a shorter talk-only visit instead. People who cancel quietly tend to stay away for years, which is the outcome we are trying to avoid.

Request a visit

Send the details and we will offer you times.

This is a request rather than a confirmed booking. Reception reads it the next working day and replies with two or three times that fit the days you have given us. Urgent messages are read first.
